ON OUR TABLES:
TransAmerica 2x (led by Nicole/Sean) 2001 game of route building that comfortably handles up to 6 due to lightning quick turns to connect one’s 5 cities before the other players. There is a ‘Vexation’ expansion that adds 3 player colored tracks for sole use of that player… to add to the tension. There was a sequel, the 2005 Trans Europa edition, set on a map of Europe and adding ferries.
We had dueling TransAmericas with 6 on one table and 5 on the other.
Age of Rail: South Africa (led by Tim) 2011 updated version of John Bohrer’s Veld Railroads with upgraded components from the Winsome Cube rail/Iron Rail series by Capstone games.. The game features auctions/bidding, drafting and stock holding. After an initial auction for the first shares of these companies, players take turns, choosing from one of four different actions: build track, develop settlement, offer stock, and pay dividends. These actions are limited; only one dividend action exists, for example, so when a player chooses this, the action remains blocked until that player’s next turn, at which time they must choose a different action. Two “offer stock” actions and three “develop settlement” actions are available; “build track” is an unlimited action and can be repeated on the next turn.

When players buy stock, the spent funds go into the company’s treasury and can be used to build track. By developing settlements, you increase the value of stations, and a railroad’s income increases when it links to stations. When dividends are paid, the company’s income is divided by five (the number of shares) and paid to the owner of those shares.

After the sixth dividend, the game ends — but that final dividend includes bonuses based on the number of company links and is paid out solely based on the number of shares issued, not all of the shares in existence.

Railroad Tiles (led by K-ban) 2025 tile placement and pattern building game. Players start each round by drafting tiles from the sets available in the common pool, then they place their routes on their tableau, trying to make as many connections as possible, while being careful not to lock themselves in with choices that are too constraining. Each round, players can also place cars, trains, or travelers to populate the landscape they are creating. The available actions change from round to round, so players need to prepare in advance! The more pieces of the same kind each new placement connects to, the more points that players earn. One can also score bonus points at game’s end for placing tiles in a large rectangle without gaps and for creating sets of three adjacent city tiles.
Ticket to Ride (led by Nicole) 2004 set collection and route building Game of the Year (SdJ) is Alan R. Moon’s most widely known design, and has sold millions of copies. Players draft and collect cards of various types of train cars that they then use to claim railway routes in North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come to those who fulfill Tickets – goal cards that connect distant cities; and to the player who builds the longest continuous route. There are many expansion maps available that introduce ferries, stations and accompanying rules variations.
San Francisco Cable Car (led by Sean) 2009 is a reworked rerelease Dirk Henn’s railroad game that was originally published in 1997 by

db-Spiele as Iron Horse and in 2000 by Queen Games as Metro, with a different theme, new artwork and the components and rules to play the new, optional variant “Cable Car Company,” which introduces

stock holding to the game.

Players place square tiles onto the board to form rail lines. The object of the game is to make the rail lines as long as possible. Players start with a number of cars ringing the board. When a tile placement connects a car to a station (either to those on the edge or to the power station in the center of the board), that car is turned to indicate it has been scored and the player scores one point for each tile that the route crosses.

Isle of Trains: All Aboard (led by Reimi) 2023 revision of Isle of Trains –  a card-based engine building game where cards have multiple uses: they can be used as locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, or buildings to improve the effectiveness and abilities of a player’s train. Cards can also be spent to pay for the construction of new train cars and buildings, or they can be used as cargo and be loaded onto available freight cars.

Players also have a range of passengers who want to be taken to different destinations. One will draw these passengers at random from a bag when building passenger cars and certain locomotives. Players can then load passengers into any available passenger car. When passengers are delivered to their destinations, they will provide an instant powerful bonus!

Loading cargo and passengers into opponents’ trains is important on the Isle of Trains, as it’ll also gain a player extra bonuses that turn! But this will help the other train conductors get a little closer to completing their goals, by giving them the cargo or passengers, which they can then use for deliveries and big end game points!

The game ends when a certain number of contracts have been completed, or a certain number of passengers are delivered. Players win by scoring the most points, which you earn by building up your train, completing contracts, and delivering passengers. It is all about balancing the need to upgrade one’s train, with loading cargo or passengers onto opponents train for large bonuses, and delivering cargo and passengers to their destinations before anyone else.

Railroad Rivals (led by K-ban) 2018 tile-drafting and tile-laying game in which players build a railroad empire that stretches across America…and across the table. Players connect cities via one of the twelve great railroads that stretched across the United States in the late 1800’s, while simultaneously building one’s stock portfolio. Those railroads are utilized to make deliveries that drive up the price of stocks. At the end of the game, the player who has run the most profitable railroad while also owning the most valuable stocks becomes the greatest of all of the railroad rivals!
Each turn players draft one new city tile and one new railroad stock tile. One then places one of their city tiles next to a city tile that is already on the table to create a link between the two cities. The matching edges must both have the same railroad on them. Each newly laid city gets one or more randomly drawn colored cubes placed on it that represent the goods that can be delivered from that city. After all players have laid their city tile, one goods cube is transported using one of that city’s railroad links. This gives players points and raises the value of that railroad stock.

At the end of the game, a player’s score is the total of all of the points that they received from deliveries, from use by other players of one’s railroad links, and from the value of all of of a player’s railroad stock tiles.

Pioneer Rails (led by Sean)  2023 flip-and-write game using a cut down deck of poker cards (10-A in each suit) to build a poker hand and extend your rail empire across the new lands of the frontier, connecting various establishments to one’s rail network while trying to satisfy the demands of the locals.
