ON OUR TABLES:
Tiger & Dragon (led by Tim)  2021 beautifully produced shedding card game played with chunky tiles. Players play tiles from their hand to participate in waves of attack and defense. Be the first player to empty their hand to score points based on whichever one of ten scoring cards are in use this round. The game contains 38 tiles: 36 numbered tiles with one 1, two 2s, etc. up to eight 8s, along with a tiger and a dragon. The tiles are shuffled face down, then each player takes tiles based on the player count, with the round’s starting player taking one additional tile. The start player attacks by playing a tile from their hand. The next player can either pass or defend the attack by playing the same tile. Note that the dragon defends against any odd-numbered tile and the tiger against any even-numbered tile. After defending, place a tile of your own to attack. If a player passes, the next player either passes or defends. If all other players pass on your attack, place a tile from your hand face down, then choose a new tile to attack again. If you attack with the dragon or tiger, a player can defend with any odd- or even-numbered tile, respectively. The first player to empty their hand wins the round and scores points based on the last tile that they played and the specific scoring card for that round. They score 1 bonus point for each time an attack of theirs went undefended. At the end of a round, if a player has scored 10+ points, they win.
Sauros (led by Sean) 2026 dinosaur themed trick-taking, puzzle game, where players win tiles to then place on their player mats to align suits and symbols for dynamic scoring. The twist is the trump suit changes with each trick!

Featuring five asymmetric player mats and unique scoring conditions, each mat representing one of the five dinosaurs present in Sauros.

The game is played in a series of rounds. At the end of each round, the player mats are rotated. Once each player has played each mat, the points from all rounds are tallied and the player with the highest score wins.

Dominoes – Texas Fives/Muggins (led by K-ban) 1500 tile laying game. Texas Fives expands the standard Block game where the object is to be the first to rid yourself of tiles to a more challenging one where players score points if the ends add up to a multiple of 5.
Mahjong (led by Sandy) 1850 traditional Chinese tile rummy game frequently used to gamble. There are many different scoring systems….the American scoring changes annually, governed by cards purchased from the National Mah Jongg League.
Bananagrams (led by Tony) 2006 real-time word game, where players use a selection of 144 plastic letter tiles independently to create their own ‘crossword’ faster than one’s opponents. When a player uses up all their letters, all players take a new tile from the pool. The object of the game is to be the first to complete a word grid after the “bunch” of tiles has been depleted.

Quandary/Loco/Botswana/Flinke Pinke/Wildlife 2X (led by Tim/K-ban)  We played on the 1994 Milton Bradley 4-player version of this Knizia classic, described as a game of placement, shares and nerves. This edition has chunky heavy tiles. Players in turn lay numbered/colored tiles on tracks curling to the center, and then take a Quandary tile share in any color. The round ends when a single track is filled. Scoring is based on a player’s total shares multiplied by the value of the final tile played on each track. Perceived value with brinkmanship blended in….a very subtle game that keeps getting reprinted/rethemed because it simply works!

Quacks (led by Tony) 2018 push-your-luck game where players play as quack doctors, each making their own secret brew by adding ingredients one at a time. Take care with what you add, though, for a pinch too much of this or that will explode the whole pot. Each player has their own bag of ingredient chips. During each round, they simultaneously draw chips from their bags and add them to their pots. The higher the face value of the drawn chip, the further it is placed in the pot’s swirling pattern, increasing how much the potion will be worth. Push your luck as far as you can. At the end of each round, players gain victory points and coins to spend on new ingredients, depending on how well they managed to fill up their pots. But players whose pots have exploded must choose points or coins — not both! The player with the most victory points at the end of nine rounds wins the game.
Lexio (led by K-ban)  2005 Korean climbing/shedding game, based on the traditional Chinese card game system of “Zheng Shangyou” – and is virtually the same game as Big Two (also known as Chinese Poker). Many other card games are based on the same mechanism (The Great Dalmuti, Gang of Four, Tichu, Scout, etc.), but LEXIO uses tiles similar to those in Mahjong instead of cards, and they are chunky to say the least. In accordance with Chinese tradition, the number “2” is the strongest number. The suits are named after the sun, the moon, the stars, and the clouds – and serve as a secondary hierarchy to break ties.

In the game, a player leads a tile or set of tiles, and the other players must follow by either playing a higher tile or set of tiles as the set that was led or passing. The play continues until all players have passed in succession after the final play, and the player who won the last set leads next. Play continues until one player has played all of their tiles. Each player then pays chips to those players who performed better – that is, the player who went out will get paid by all other players, and the other players pay points to one another based on the difference in the number of tiles each held at the end of the hand. A game lasts five rounds, and the player at the end of the game with the most points wins.

Paint the Roses (led by Zach) 2022 Alice in Wonderland themed deduction game where the fickle Queen of Hearts is making not so veiled threats against her gardeners (the players) to make the roses conform to her ever changing whims. Whim cards can be easy (color only), medium (color or shape) or hard (any combo) but have color coded backs. Players in turn place a tile into the garden and everyone else places their colored cubes to indicate the number of matches to their whim card. Each turn the team has to make at least one deducted guess – if correct the gardener miniature advances, if not the Queen of Hearts advances twice as fast as usual. If the Queen catches up to the gardeners – it’s off with their heads! If the garden is completed the gardeners win. Our intrepid quartet successfully completed their garden and avoided beheading. We played on the Deluxe edition with the Acrylic tiles.

Castles of Burgundy (led by Sean) 2023 deluxe edition of Stefan Feld’s classic 2011 design. Each player takes on the role of an aristocrat, originally controlling a small princedom. While playing, players aim to build settlements and powerful castles, practice trade along the river, exploit silver mines, and use the knowledge of travelers.

Sushi Roll (led by K-ban) 2019 dice version of the Sushi Go card game where players roll and draft sushi dice and pass the rest via pseudo-conveyor belts to their opponents. Earn points for combos and the usual end of game pudding rewards and penalties. Add the bakelite Geek-up bits to add a tactile experience.
Other Games Played
Bargain Hunter (led by Zach) 1998 Uwe Rosenberg (Bohnanza, Agricola, LeHavre, Nova Luna, Patchwork) set collection trick taking card game (originally Schnäppchen Jagd auf Deutsch). The deck is one through nine in six suits, with two of each card (two 1s, two 2s, etc.). After the initial hand of eight is dealt, players select one card value to collect, which is placed face-up in front of each player. A fairly standard trick-taking game takes place with the remaining cards, with players following suit if they can. If you cannot, the card you play can be trump, if you desire. If two cards of the same suit/value appear, the second can be declared as either high or low. When a player wins a trick, the cards of the same value they are collecting are placed in his ‘good’ pile, with each worth one point. All the rest are put in the ‘bad’ pile, with each worth minus one point. However, at the end of each hand, players can convert one value of cards from their ‘bad’ pile onto the ‘good’ pile.
Coloretto (led by Zach) 2003 Michael Schacht (Web of Power, Lucky Numbers, Zooloretto, Drive, Valdora) card game of set collecting with a push your luck mechanic. Players either draw a card to play to a row, or take a row of cards to add them to their collection. A row can have at most three cards, so at some point everyone is forced to take a row. Once all the rows have been claimed, players start a new round, drawing or taking once again.

Players are trying to collect huge sets – but only in three colors, as every color beyond the third will cost players points. Jokers are highly-prized, as they always match what players want, and +2 cards provide sure points, giving players a back-up plan if everything goes wrong in collecting colors.

Once only a few cards remain in the deck, the round ends and everyone tallies their score, choosing three colors of cards to score positively while any other colors counts negatively. Each color is scored using a triangular number system: the first card in a color is ±1 point, the second card is ±2 points, and so on. The player with the high score wins!
