8/9/2023 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #23-32

15 at Purple Dragon Games on 9/9/2023

We returned to our old habit of pairing off with 2-player games to start the evening until all arrived – the flow of the evening improved as milling around was minimized and we could better plan for gamers arriving and departing at odd intervals.
Our 8/16 session will be a request session. What do you want to try that you missed the first time around?
Nicole would like to play Dominion using K-ban’s tricked out disk set that turns it into a bag builder.
Tony wants to play Heat: Pedal to the Metal and defend his previous win.
Armando is looking to lead first plays of both Rajas of the Ganges and Powerlines.
K-ban wants to play Blazon with Tony leading.
More 2-player games will hit our tables as well
We completed several Trekking games for the main event

ON OUR TABLES:
2-player fare:

Jaipur

(led by Drew Z) 2009 classic card game of trading, drafting and buying goods at the market. The camel mechanic makes the game go. Win 2 of 3 rounds to triumph over your opponent. Should be in everyone’s 2-player game collection.

Glasgow

(led by Sean) 2020 city building game that uses a rondel mechanic along with tile drafting.

Lost Cities

(led by K-ban) 1999 classic Knizia card game of forming expeditions. Should be in every couples game collection.

Blokus Duo

(self led) having played Blokus previously, it was easy for our dynamic duo to jump right into the tense 2-player version from 2005.

King Domino

(led by Armando) 2016 SdJ winner that is not strictly a 2-player game, but it plays very well 2-handed

Paris: City of Lights

2x (led by Tim) 2019 2-phase tile drafting and placement game. Second time was with the Eifel expansion

Patchwork

(led by Ethan) 2014 Uwe Rosenberg classic polyomino game. Another that should be in everyone’s collection.

Multi-player Games

Crokinole

(led by Drew Z) this 1876 Canadian flicking game is addictive and is getting a LOT of play lately. We have 4 sets in the group.

Globetrotting

(led by Sean) 2023 game of planning the perfect vacations, with players drawing routes (using wet-erase markers) on a 3D plastic globe. VPs are earned for flying at lowest total cost, completion of personal bucket list tasks as well as for completing public objectives. Plays in well under an hour. Has similarities to ‘On Tour’ but is much more forgiving. This time the expansion was used so 5 (or 6) could play together.

Karuba

(led by K-ban) 2015 Rudiger Dorn family game.Puzzle tile game of exploration, with players receiving VPs for getting each of their explorers to their like-colored temple before opponents do likewise. Pick up gold and gems along the way for additional points.

Parks

(led by Tim) 2019 game of hiking and exploring the US National Parks, creating memories and earning VPs along the way. The 2021 Nightfall expansion was used.

Tokaido

(led by Sean) Antoine Bauza’s ( 7 Wonders, Hanabi, Ghost Stories) 2012 game of travellers on a famous Japanese road. The potential action spaces in Tokaido are laid out on a linear track, with players advancing down this track to take actions. The player who is currently last on the track takes a turn by advancing forward on the track to their desired action and taking that action, so players must choose whether to advance slowly in order to get more turns, or to travel more rapidly to beat other players to their desired action spaces.

Namiji

(led by K-ban) 2022 sequel to Tokaido, re-themed as a fishing game but adding more ways to score and a push your luck element. We’ll try again with 4 players and the Aquamarine expansion at another session.
