4/12/2023 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #23-15

13 at Purple Dragon Games on April 12, to honor the memory of German game author Klaus Teuber. Back in 1995, Teuber’s design of Settlers of Catan signaled the renaissance for modern boardgaming….paving the way for all that has followed for the next 25+ years.

Our April 19 session will be by request – so here’s another chance to play something that intrigued you, but was missed the first time around.
IN: Steve & Sandy, Sean & Quinn, Amy & Ethan, Tim, Drew, Danny, Edward & Kitty, Tony & Rachel

On Our Tables:

Bakschisch

(led by K-ban) 1995 collaborative effort by 4 German game authors (including Herr Teuber) created while drunk in a pub.  Players attempt to sneak and bribe their way into a Sultan’s palace by risking coins and playing thieves. A half hour filler.

Starfarers of Catan

(led by Drew) 1999 re-theming and re-imagining Catan in space with very cool 3D rocket ships. Resources are traded for colony ships, trade ships, and fleet upgrades of freight rings, booster rockets, and cannon. Beware as you explore—some planets are covered in ice, and some conceal dangerous pirates.

Hoity Toity/ Adel Verplichtet

(led by K-ban) 1990 German Game of the Year winner as Adel Verplichtet. (First North American published German game in 1992 by AH) Go to the Auction House or Castle to gain treasures and their resultant VPs by exhibiting collections…..but beware of thieves and detectives.

Domaine

(led by Sean) 2003 streamlining of 1997’s Lowenherz where players form domains by placing walls on the modular board to enclose territory. Completed domains can then be expanded, even into your opponents’. Protect domains by placing knights, which resist expansion.

Actions are taken by playing cards that have a cost associated with them. Gain money by selling cards and controlling mines. Sold cards can be acquired by other players.

Players score points based on the quantity and type of terrain enclosed in their domains, as well as by controlling many mines of a single type. The winner is the first player to cross a specific point threshold or the player with the most points when the card deck runs out.

Catan

2x (led by Amy & K-ban) the 1995 SdJ winner that popularized German-style board games with over 40 million copies sold. We played simultaneous 3-player plain vanilla Settlers, but with the Welfare/Food Stamps variant.
