6/15/2022 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #22-23

8 at Purple Dragon Games on June 15, 2022

At the end of June we will be celebrating our first anniversary at Purple Dragon. Sean and Armando were among the intrepid 6 that ventured forth despite COVID fears to jump start the group.. We added a dozen regulars along the way and are now a tight knit group of friends – who welcome newbies to the group with warmth and enthusiasm. We’ve been on a voyage of discovering modern game design with a sense of awe and wonder. Our table leaders have provided a curated experience for all. We sincerely thank Niko at Purple Dragon Games for providing us with a home on Wednesdays.
If you haven’t played with our group, kindly give us a visit. If you haven’t played in a few months, return and be among gaming friends.
IN: Steve & Sandy, Sean, Emmet, Tim, Armando, Amy & Ethan
ON OUR TABLES:
Happy City (led by K-ban) 2021 Gamewright 20-minute entry level drafting/engine building game. My analogy is if you start a newbie off with Sushi Go, you can easily teach them 7 Wonders, Same thing with Happy City and Splendor. This is a game to share with non-gamers, grandparents and kids.
Cryptid (led by Tim)  A 2018 release in English but just released in Germany in time to be a finalist for this year’s Kennerspiel (gamer’s game of the year). A unique deduction game of honest misdirection, in which players must try to uncover information about their opponents’ clues while throwing them off the scent of their own. Each player holds one piece of evidence to help them find the creature, and on their turn they can try to gain more information from their opponents.
Foundations of Rome (led by K-ban) 2022 Kickstarter from Emerson Matsuuchi (author of the Century Trilogy and Reef) as he pays homage to Sid Sackson’s Acquire and then takes things several steps further while keeping the rules simple and the game engaging to players of all levels. Overproduced? certainly, but the game shines and finishes in a reasonable 60-90 minutes.
Masques (led by Armando) 2010 influence card game, with open drafting and role selection.
Scout (2x) – (led by K-ban) one of 3 finalists for this year’s SdJ (German Game of the Year – Spiel des Jahres) A Japanese design that was released in 2018 but just made it to Germany this year. This is a very clever climbing card game (increase previous player’s show/meld) with cards that have both a top and bottom number and your hand has to be kept in the order it was dealt. Either put on a show by increasing the value of the meld on offer or Scout and take a card from either end of the meld currently on offer. We played it twice in succession as all 4 of us at the table were intrigued. Clever scoring system that rewards efficient hand management.
Archaeology: the New Expedition – (led by Tim)  2016 early Phil Walker-Harding design (Australian author of Sushi Go, BarenPark, Cacao, Gizmos, Imhotep, Silver & Gold, Super Mega Lucky Box ) A clever combination of set collection, drafting and push your luck.
