11/1/2023 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #23-43

14 at the Uno Park Community Center on 11/1/2023 for a request night

A sincere thanks to all who changed their RSVP to regrets on game day due to illness – feel better and thanks for not sharing. Clear communication of everyone’s attendance status is greatly appreciated, as it allows our table leaders to prepare your curated experience.
Our November 8 session will have dual themes:
1) Games rated 8.0+ by BGG Users (since the date ends in an ‘8’) – our featured complex games will be Root and/or Great Western Trail. If you want to reserve a seat at the table, e-mail me. Expect a 3+ hour game that requires prior knowledge either via reading the rules or watching a how to play video. If someone brings their Crokinole set it will get played.
2) Cooperative Games – players at the table vs the game itself. Featured game will be Tesseract with Sean leading. Openers will likely be from among: Just One, Hanabi, Dorf Romantik, Tranquility, Mass Transit, Cahoots, 60 Second City and more. Can we lure Niko out of semi-retirement for his favorite co-op – Spirit Island?
For those with game collections, Sean has used the GeekGroup utility to create a combined database of our game collections. Using the ‘Insights’ tab, one

can see graphs and charts of our games by author, publisher, length, mechanic, etc. For instance, we have 119 games designed by Reiner Knizia , 49 by Wolfgang Kramer, 34 by Alan Moon, 32 by Bruno Cathala and 29 by Klaus Teuber. Send Steve your BGG user ID and Sean will import your collection and provide the link. Updates occur weekly on Mondays.

ON OUR TABLES:

Tiger & Dragon

(led by Tim) 2021 game where players play MahJong-like chunky tiles from their hand to participate in waves of attack and defense. Be the first player to empty your hand to score points, based on whichever one of ten scoring cards are in use this round.

A Fistful of Meeples

(led by Matt) A 2019 Mancala-like meets worker placement game set in the Wild West.

Piece’O’Cake/NY Slice

(led by K-ban) 2008 encore from our divide and choose night. One player divides an 11-slice pie into as many portions as players but the twist is that the divider keeps the remainder.

Vegas/Las Vegas

(led by Drew) 2012 Knizia easy, dice-rolling, fun-and-luck game with a lot of interaction and ‘schadenfreude’

Take 6/ 6 Nimmt!/Category 5

(led by Sean) Wolfgang Kramer’s 1994 classic card game that was the first game we played together at Purple Dragon Games. A great opener or closer that can accommodate up to 10 players. Avoid taking bullheads!”

The Red Cathedral

(led by Tim)  a strategic 2020 Spanish game in which the players take the roles of construction teams. Their job is to work together to put up St. Basil’s cathedral in Moscow, as ordered by Ivan the Terrible, using a rondel, dice, area influence and contracts. Tim has become a major fan of games published by DEVIR, so expect more like a return of 3 Ring Circus and to introduce The White Castle.

Empire’s End

(led by Matt) 2023 John D Clair auction/bidding game. Players begin with a civilization at the height of its power. Play proceeds through a series of phases, varying as one progresses through the game. During the Disaster phase, players face a common threat such as famine, a flood, or barbarians. The player who ends the bidding must take the disaster, which devastates one of their territories. With each disaster that befalls an empire, its people grow in wisdom and resilience. In the style of the modern classic game No Thanks, resources bid by all players will end up in the hands of the player who ultimately takes the disaster card. That player also gains a new ability, an innovation that reflects their empire’s ability to adapt in the face of challenging times.

Quacks of Quedlinburg

(led by Tony) 2018 push your luck game where players are charlatans — or quack doctors — each making their own secret brew by adding ingredients one at a time. Each player has their own bag of ingredient chips. During each round, they simultaneously draw chips from their bags and add them to their pots. The higher the face value of the drawn chip, the further it is placed in the pot’s swirling pattern, increasing how much the potion will be worth. Push your luck as far as you can, but if you add too many cherry bombs, your pot will explode!

SpellBook

(led by K-ban) 2023 Phil Walker-Harding where each player collects magical materia to learn and use magic spells. When one player either learns all 7 spells in play or completes their magician’s grimoire the points are added up. Each spell combination gives an effect that lasts the rest of the game, and the more ingenious the combination, the more powerful the effect. As the rounds progress, the game becomes a different experience every time, with more than 2,100 spell combinations being possible.

Savannah Park

(led by Sean) 2021 Wolfgang Kramer/Michael Kiesling bingo-like puzzle game with tiles….sort of like ‘Take It Easy’ on steroids. Players each run their own wildlife park, and your goal is to group herds of animals with their own kind — but everyone takes turns deciding what tiles to move, so you might not be able to shuffle animals into the right spaces. Points are scored for leaving grasslands and trees undisturbed and for your largest herd of each of six animal types, multiplied by the number of their watering holes. The same publisher and authors collaborated to design a sequel in 2022, Caldera Park – which uses a similar scoring system but different tile selection method. We will compare and contrast on November 15 on Zoo/Safari Park/Ark night.
