3/15/2023 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #23-11

20 inches of heavy wet snow wasn’t enough to end our streak of 89 consecutive Wednesday Gamenites at Purple Dragon Games. Kudos to Tim & Sean for travelling an hour to make this possible.

Sandy and I were on LI from Sunday through Wednesday morning for the funeral of a dear friend, Herb Levy.  He and his wife of 49 years, Lynn, attended Berkshire Gamenites in both 2021 and 2022.  Herb was the Publisher/Editor of Gamers Alliance Reports….publishing quarterly game reviews since 1986.
I wrote around 70 reviews for GAR over the decades but Herb literally wrote over 1000 reviews. He will be greatly missed by all in the gaming community and left behind a loving family and close friends. Herb and I played in over 1000 Long Island Gamenites since the early 1990’s. I gave one of the eulogies at graveside. Herb was 73. It was an emotionally draining week.
Our 3/22 session will be by request and a catch-up on games our table leaders have recently received and prepared for our gaming enjoyment.
Expect to see from among the following:
Steam Up, Mangrovia, Hamlet, Everdell, Akropolis, Isla Dorada, Gutenberg, Honey Buzz and Dragons, Dungeons, Dice & Danger, Riverside and more.
Please RSVP whether intending to join us or regrets….it really helps up plan for the number of players anticipated.
IN: Steve & Sandy, Sean, Tim

ON OUR TABLES:
Tsukiji (led by K-ban) 2017 market manipulation game set in the Tokyo fish market, where players try to secure the most valuable fish for their restaurant while on a fixed budget.

Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum

(led by Sean) 2023 crowd-funded game of set collection and action management. Each player has a different personality that allows them to break one different rule of the game. Incredible 3D components including 16 stacking steamer trays, a rotating lazy Susan and squishy dim sum (in the Deluxe version only….but Sean and I both pledged the Deluxe edition). Players accumulate tokens used to purchase batches of dim sum. Special fortune cards add rotating the turntable one quarter turn in either direction. It’s a tad chaotic but fun nonetheless.

Akropolis

(led by Tim)  2022 tile drafting game that won the 2023 French Game of the Year. Add tiles to your city spreading both out and upward. Build housing, temples, markets, gardens and barracks, so you can grow your city and ensure it triumphs over the others. Raise its prestige with harmonious planning that conforms to specific rules, and enhance it by building plazas. Quarries allow one to build higher up, increasing the value of your districts and scoring VPs as well as earning stones used to draft more tiles of your choosing.. Simple play procedure of drafting a tile, placing it in your city and scoring points at the end make this very accessible..
