12/28/2022 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #22-52

14 at Purple Dragon Games for our final 2022 session.

Welcome to Cait and Jacob on their first visit, and welcome back to Ian!
This session report is from Sean – thanks for leading our train themed session. Josh filled in for Steve & Sandy (on a road trip South).

Next week’s session theme is New Arrivals for the New Year. Did you get a game for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, or Festivus? Did you pick up some new hotness at PAX Unplugged, or has a Kickstarter arrived in the mail recently? Or did you spend the gift card from Great Aunt Sally to get something new? Maybe you just have something in your collection that you haven’t gotten a chance to get to the table yet. Learn it (!), bring it, teach us.

Let Sean know what you want to bring so we’re not doubling up (unless we want to).

IN: Sean, Wendy, Quinn, Edward, Tim, Ben, Cait, Rob, Josh, Drew D, Ian & Jacob, Ethan and Drew

ON OUR TABLES:
Station Master (led by Sean) 2004 train themed card game in which players attempt to influence the value of departing trains by assigning passengers (hidden value chips) and carriages (cards) to locomotives in an effort to get the trains to depart on time and accumulate the most points.
Railroad Ink 2x (led by Tim) 2018 roll & write where each round, rolled dice determine which kind of road and railway routes are available to all players. Draw these routes on your erasable board to create transport lines and connect your exits, trying to optimize the available symbols better than your opponents. The more exits you connect, the more points you score at the end of the game, but you lose points for each incomplete route, so plan carefully!
Ticket to Ride: Europe (led by Drew Z and Josh) 2005 reimplementation of the classic Ticket to Ride features brand new gameplay elements. Tunnels may require you to pay extra cards to build on them, Ferries require locomotive cards in order to claim them, and Stations allow you to sacrifice points in order to use an opponent’s route to connect yours. The overall goal remains the same: collect and play train cards in order to place your pieces on the board, attempting to connect cities on your ticket cards.
China Rails (led by Ethan) This 2007 game in the venerable Empire Builder series of crayon rail games allows players, using washable crayons, to draw their train routes over a map of  The People’s Republic of China and Taiwan. Players start with an initial sum of money which they use to build short lengths of track during their first couple of turns. For the rest of the game, players operate their trains over the track network drawn on the board to pick up and deliver loads to various cities, and then have the opportunity to add to their track network or improve their train. Connect your track network to the four major cities and one of the links to Taiwan, and acquire 250 million yuan cash in hand to win. This is a long game and the winning conditions were not met by the end of the night, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Get on Board: New York & London (led by Tim) This 2022 reimplementation of the Saashi & Saashi flip & write game Let’s Make a Bus Route gives you twelve rounds in which to build the best bus line in town. Each round reveals a new card that shows each player the route shape they must complete. Place your bus accordingly on the central board. Take the passengers where they want to go by connecting them and their destination to your bus line, avoid traffic, and gain as many victory points as possible!
Trans Europa (led by Edward) 2005 simple railway game. Each player has a set of five cities strung across Europe that need to be connected by rail. Players place either one or two rails each turn. The first player to connect their five cities wins the round, with all other players losing points for being too slow! After 3-4 rounds, the player with the most points wins!
Metro 2x (led by Sean & group second time) Similar to StreetcarTsuroTantrix and Spaghetti Junction, this game has players putting square tiles onto the board to form rail lines. Players are striving to make their rail lines as long as possible. Start with a number of trains ringing the board. Whenever a tile placement connects a train to a station (either on the edge or the center of the board), that train is removed and the player scores one point for each tile that the route crosses, which can cause one tile to score multiple times if the track loops around. However, players score double for city connections, which are the stations in the center of the board.
Next Station: London 2x (led by Tim) This 2022 flip & write game asks players to optimize 4 different color tube lines, drawing one line each round. Each line is scored by multiplying the number of sectors the line crosses by the number of station stops in the sector with the most stops, adding points for each time the line crosses the Thames. Visiting tourist attractions and connecting multiple lines to the same station provide bonus points at the end.
Thanks all for a wonderful 2022 at Berkshire Gamers
