5/18/2022 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #22-20

It was bound to happen….gamers preparing for a theme night unmasked at my home last Friday….and someone tests positive for COVID. In this case the someone was Sandy – but fortunately everyone else tested negative….but we all played it safe for Wednesday….cutting expected attendance by 8 gamers.

Thanks to our intrepid Vermont duo, Tim & Drew, for keeping our weekly streak alive at 47 consecutive Wednesdays gaming at Purple Dragon Games.

Pirate Game Night has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, May 25….Argghhhhh!
IN: Tim, Drew, Emily
ON THE TABLE:
Drew decided to list the games played via increasing levels of player interaction
Uluru:Tumult am Ayers Rock/Pelican Cove (led by Drew) 2011 German real-time puzzle game about Pelicans, pattern recognition is key.
Drew: everyone has their heads down, working on their own boards
Deep Sea Adventure (led by Tim) 2014 Japanese push your luck game of treasure hunting/pick up and deliver- as players are divers sharing a boat and a single tank of air
Drew: Players leapfrog over other players in front of them
The Climbers (led by Tim) 2008 wooden game where your goal is to climb to the highest level of the structure. To help with your climb, you may move and rotate blocks. Ladders can be used to climb large distances. Blocking disks will prevent other players from using a specific block. Use your tools wisely and at the right time to make the best possible moves in your adventure to the top! Massive deforestation but excellent table presence.
Drew: once a game, mark one block as Off Limits to other players
Amul (led by Tim) originally called Silk Road, this 2019 card game is one of bustling bazaars and clever merchants .Each player is a striving merchant, competing for wealth and success. The creative card drafting mechanism caters to swift and simultaneous gameplay, keeping all players constantly engaged.

Draft cards from the market to collect goods and valuables, hire guards, assemble caravans, and make contracts with traders. Manage your hand effectively, as only certain cards can be played to the table for scoring, while others must be in your hand for optimal end game scoring.

Drew: throughout the game, keep an eye on on which cards the other players are laying down

The Downfall of Pompeii  (led by Drew) This 2004 game falls into two halves: before and after the eruption of Vesuvius. Before the eruption, players play cards to place their pieces in buildings. After the first eruption, they can also place as many relatives as the number of pieces already in the building they placed their piece in. When Omen cards are drawn, the player can take any opponent’s piece and throw it into the erupting volcano. In this manner, players try to get as many pieces onto the board as close to the exits from the city as possible.

After the second eruption, the game changes. Now each player places a lava tile, which kills any pieces on that square and may block exits from the city. Then they move two pieces toward the exits, moving them a number of squares equal to the pieces on the square from which they started. The player who gets the most pieces out of the city wins.

Drew: shepherd your pieces to safety while hindering & removing your opponents’ pieces
