3/30/2022 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #22-13

13 gamers for our 13th session of 2022…..a Night at the Races (of the 4-legged variety) – horses, camels, chariots, dog-sleds

No theme for our April 6 session but our table leaders are working on another curated gaming experience for the group. Requests anyone?

IN: Steve & Sandy, Sean & Wendy, Emmet, Tim, Armando, Amy, Emily, Danny, Sofia, Greta, Annie
ON OUR TABLES:
Camel Up (led by Tim) 2014 SdJ (German Family Game of the Year). Bet on 5 racing camels at various stages of the race – with stackable wooden camels. End game bonus cards contribute to the chaos/hilarity.
Ave Caesar (led by K-ban) 1989 chariot racing/ We played on the original Ravensburger German edition. 3 laps with requirement to pay homage to Caesar between laps 1 & 2 or 2 & 3.
Much screwage through blocking at the various choke points.Light game, later reworked with cars as Ausgebremmst.
Long Shot: the Dice Game (led by Sean) 2022 Kickstarter – roll & write version of 2009’s Long Shot board game. Buy and bet on horses, while completing the concession grid to earn bonus actions and helmet/jersey actions to increase a horses movement and betting.
Snow Tails (led by Armando) 2008 dog-sled racing designed by the Scottish LaMont Brothers. Pilot your sled via clever card play (dog 1 + dog 2 less braking…..add drift to the side with the stronger canine) while navigating the snow course with speed limits on the curves….and the very real possibility of dings and dents along the walls.
TurfMaster (led by K-ban) 1998 horse racing with beautiful components. A series of 3 races with points earned for placing. Card management with a handicap system that prevents runaway leaders. Alternating rounds of card and dice rounds. We played the base game (sans steeplechase jumps)
Honey Bears (led by Sandy) 1998 Bear racing card game later rethemed as Bucket Brigade. The crux of the card play is that the same card used to move the bears are needed to score victory points.
Change Horses (led by Sean) 2008 horse racing with the blasphemous premise of winning by backing the biggest LOSER. Silly fun
Paperback (led by Tim) – so we ran out of racing games that fit the remaining time. 2014 word building through deck building game designed by Tim Fowers.
