ON OUR TABLES:
Concordia (led by Zach) 2013 peaceful, strategy game of economic development in Roman times. Instead of looking to luck-driven dice or cards, players must rely on their strategic abilities. Watching  rivals to determine which goals they are pursuing and where one can outpace them is essential to victory. In the game, colonists are sent out from Rome to settle down in cities that produce bricks, food, tools, wine, and cloth. Each player starts with an identical set of playing cards and acquires more cards during the game. These cards serve two purposes:
  • They allow a player to choose actions during the game.
  • They are worth victory points (VPs) at the end of the game.

Concordia is a strategy game that requires advanced planning and consideration of your opponent’s moves. Every game is different, not only because of the sequence of new cards on sale but also due to the modular layout of cities.

Trans Europa (led by K-ban) 2005 reimplementation of TransAmerica set on a map of Europe and adding ferries to the rule set. Be the first to join your 5 destination cities to a shared network of track (and try to have your fellow players do some of the heavy lifting for you) while the others rack up negative points required to finish theirs.
Princes of Florence (led by Tim) 2000 Kramer/Ulrich (El Grande design team) designed bidding and tile placement game where players attract artists and scholars to their palace while trying to become the most prestigious family in Florence.

Over seven rounds, players attempt to score points in various ways, with most points being earned by playing profession cards to generate “work points”, which can be exchanged for money or victory points. The game includes a variety of professions, such as astronomers, organists, and architects; each profession is attracted to a particular combination of building, landscape feature, and social freedom, and players acquire these items via auctions. The more that a player can match these preferences, the more work points they earn — but the minimum requirement of work points increases each round, and you must meet that threshold in order to convert the work points.

Skulls of Sedlec (led by Armando)  2020 Button Shy wallet game. Players are novice monks, competing to create the best arrangement of skulls. Dig up graves from the graveyard to reveal cards, take cards into your hand to collect skulls, and arrange the cards from your hand into a stack. Whoever better honors the deceased’s last wishes will score more points.

Bosa (led by Nicole) 2024 very accessible drafting and tableau building card game.  Be the player with the most points by strategically placing building cards into your 4×4 townscape to gain coins, resources, and points. Each building will have an action that you take in the order of placement in the row or column that you choose. You also select 2 of the 4 goal cards to score extra points at the end of the game. If you like Point City, Middle Ages and Splendor, this 45 minute Gateway game will appeal to you.
Positano (led by K-ban) 2025 drafting and building placement game where players are builders in Positano, Italy, a village stacked upon a cliffside overlooking the clear blue sea. Each round players bid on three simultaneous auctions determining the size, quality and location of your new resorts on the three dimensional cliffside board. Quality resorts will earn the most points, but only if you have a clear view of the sea!

BID – Players will simultaneously choose and reveal two bid cards at the start of each round. Players must balance how they prioritize the auctions and the tiles they hope to draft!

DRAFT – Based on their bids, players draft tiles from the bid board. Your tiles determine where on the cliffside you can build that turn, how many building blocks you add to your stockpile, and the quality of your new construction.

BUILD – Compete for seaside views as you build in three dimensions on a tiered cliffside!

SCORE – You’ll score points for having quality buildings with a clear view out to sea, but also for collecting gelato and capitalizing on the public goal cards!

I have the cliffside crowding expansion which expands from 4-6 players…all completed in 45 minutes.

Yokai Septet (led by Zach) 2018  trick-taking card game that is a reimplementation of  2015’s ‘7 symbols and 7 Nations” The deck consists of 7 cards in 7 different suits. The team game was played, the winning team being the first to capture four Boss Yokai ‘7’ cards.
Web of Power (led by Nicole) Classic 2000 Michael Schacht area control/influence , drafting and network building game that has been rethemed/revised as China, Han and Iwari. Players struggle for influence over regions of Europe by placing two different types of control markers, Monasteries and Advisors. Monasteries are the basic placement, with the goal of securing a majority in a region or chain of monasteries or even decent points from second place. The placement of the Advisors is more restricted as the total number of Advisors in a region is limited by the majority player’s number of monasteries. The game is played in two rounds and is very fast paced.
Ticket to Ride : Northern Lights (led by Tony) 2022 standalone game in Ticket to Ride series, designed for 2–5 players and introduces various end game bonus cards – 4 of 11 are selected every game, so now there are games where, for example, longest route gives extra points, but in other games you will score some extra, if most unused trains are in your supply. Tony & Rachel picked up this exceedingly rare version in a Scandinavian gift shop on their recent cross country skiing trip.
Iliad (led by Armando) 2025 2-player Knizia tile-placement strategy game. On a player’s turn they select one of two tiles from their hand and place it onto the board adjacent to an opponent’s tile. Both players have symmetrical pools of tiles, with their strength ranging from 1-5, along with the Dolos tile that mimics your opponent’s adjacent tiles. The key to victory lies behind the relentless tension of where and when to commit your tiles. When placing a tile, you may also activate the tile’s ability, which can serve to turn the tide of war. When a row or column is filled, the player with the highest total strength in that line earns the right to select one of the two success tokens at the ends of that row or column; the other token goes to their opponent. Success tokens can earn you the favor of the Gods, and they can earn (or cost players) points. At the end of the game, the winner is the player who has earned the favor of all five Gods. If both players — or neither of them — meet this qualification, then the player who has earned the most points wins. Thus, players will face tough tactical trade-offs as they must decide whether to compete for exclusive favor of the Gods or for the most points — then influence the outcome of the game toward their intended advantage.
