9/6/2023 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report – #23-36

14 for opening night at our new home – Uno Park Community Center – plus Xander and Glyph (the Greyhounds – who got to try out the nearby dog park). Five of the 6 players who attended our opening night at Purple Dragon games 2+ years ago attended – Sean, Armando, Mike, Sandy & Steve.

We arranged 4 rectangular tables hastily and then realized by evening’s end that we instinctively placed them directly under fluorescent light fixtures for optimal effect. Sometimes things just feel right. Thanks to all who attended and made the seamless transition a joy. We have formed a vibrant community.

It was SPACE game night – ground control to Major Tom

Welcome to Matt on his first visit….he walked down the hill to Uno Park – a short commute, indeed.
Our 9/13 session will be a request night. Time and numbers conspired against getting Terraforming Mars to the table….so Amy will bring and lead it. Point City is likely to make another appearance as it was well received (twice) at our final Purple Dragon Games session.  Email your requests so I can assign table leaders and hopefully honor the request….this is your chance to play a game you may have missed the first time around. Don’t be bashful.

ON OUR TABLES:

Not Alone

(led by Tim) 2016 asymmetrical card game, in which one player (the Creature) plays against the stranded space explorers (the Hunted).

The Hunted will explore the planet Artemia using Place cards. By playing these and Survival cards, players try to avoid, confuse or distract the Creature until help arrives.

The Creature will stalk and pursue the shipwrecked survivors. By playing its Hunt cards and using the mysterious powers of Artemia, you try to wear down the Hunted and assimilate them to the planet forever.

Not hard to imagine Drew as a very animated Creature.

Cosmic Factory

(led by K-ban) 2018 game of drafting, pattern building and tile placement in a 3×3 tile grid. Through five game rounds, each player tries to build and optimize their personal nine-tile galaxy before the 1 minute timer runs out. Players must rearrange their planets into different zones while trying to keep their asteroid path as long as possible. Kaos cards challenge each player to adapt to a new rule each round. At the end of the game, your weakest zone score is added to your asteroid path score to determine the winner.

Space Base

(led by Sean) 2018 John D Clair strategic engine building game using a player board (your space base) and tableaus of ship cards that players can buy and add to their boards. It is a dice game using the core “I roll, everyone gets stuff” mechanism. Players can take their engine in a number of directions: long odds and explosive gains, low luck and steady income, big end-game combos to launch from last to first, or a mix-and-match approach. First to 40 VPs wins in this very approachable gateway game.

Moonrakers

(led by Tim & Matt) 2020 game of shipbuilding, temporary alliances, and shrewd negotiation set in a space-faring future. The players form a loose band of mercenaries, but while they are united in name, actual alliances are shaky as players are pitted against each other in the quest to become the new leader of the Moonrakers. It is a deck-building game in which players choose Contracts to attempt alone or with Allies in order to gain Prestige and Credits. After negotiating terms with Allies, players use their decks of Action cards to play Thrusters, Shields, Weapons, Reactors, and Crew to fulfill the requirements on each Contract. Each type of Action card has additional effects such as extra Actions, drawing additional cards, and protecting players from Hazards encountered while attempting Contracts.

Cosmic Encounter

(led by K-ban) my all-time favorite game dating back to1977 when taught to me at the first session I ever played with Herb & Lynn Levy. Players represent alien races that are seeking to colonize onto five foreign worlds. To accomplish this, they make challenges against other players and enlist the aid of interested parties. But alien powers, which are unique to each race, give players ways to bend or outright break some rule in the game.

The game continues until one player occupies five planets in other systems to win. Shared victories are possible and a player need not occupy one’s own system to win. We had a three way shared victory among The Trader, Loser and that pesky Parasite (who needs no invitations to join an alliance) over the Glutton and Zombie. I love teaching this timeless classic game and made 3 new converts in the process.

Wormholes

(led by Armando) 2022 Peter McPherson design. Players collect passengers from planets, each of whom have specific destinations they aim to reach. However, this pick-up-and-deliver process can be quite different once you establish wormholes between different points of the galaxy — and like any good business, your service can be used by other players…at the cost of a few points. On September 20 the author will join us to play all his published games (Fit to Print, Wormholes and Tiny Towns) as well as two new designs that are close to publication.

Barenpark

(led by Tony) – no bears in space? The 6th time’s the charm as Amy finally got to play her most requested game, while waiting to catch up to the group. Phil Walker Harding’s polyomino game is among the best of that genre’. Create the best bear themed amusement park.
