1/26/2022 – Berkshire Gamers Session Report #22-04

14 at Purple Dragon Games on a frigid January 26 (single digit temperatures going to negative 2 degrees F in the overnight)

Welcome to Patty on her first visit.
It was Caveman/Prehistoric Night with 5 Dawn of Civilization games played
Next week’s Gamenite is on Groundhog’s Day – so what better than to repeat games you might have missed the first time around or want to explore again. Check out our website for a list of the games we played the most in 2021 (thanks Sean for compiling from the session reports).
E-mail K-ban your requests so we can coordinate the games to bring and assign table leaders. I’ve had multiple requests for Barenpark (which never made it to the table on Bear Night). I can bring and lead it.  Wendy has requested Four Gardens – I can bring, if Tim will lead it again. Tim is also preparing for Pan Am – which I’d like to learn.
Our February 9th session will be an evening of all Cooperative Games – both 2-player and multiplayer coops. Either everyone wins or the game wins.  Assignments for table leaders are forthcoming based on lists they communicated previously.
IN: K-ban & Sandy, Sean & Wendy, Emmet, Armando, Drew, Tim, Dwayne, Danny,Amy, Emily, Patty, Zach
ON OUR TABLES:
Caveman Curling (led by Sean) 2010 action/dexterity party game
Stone Age (led by Drew) perhaps the best worker placement to theme pairing ever.  gain resources (food, wood, brick, stone, gold) to buy cards and buildings, make tools, grow your tribe and farming capability  but you still have to feed your people. I’ve got the expansion if there are requests to play again. 2008 game that is timeless.
Age of Dirt (led by K-ban) – Stone Age LIGHT – 2019 worker placement game in short form – cavepeople get placed in boxes for forest (lumber/berries), plains (furs but watch out for that man-eating tiger) mountains (stone/herbs) and the infamous Love Tent (grow your population). The 3D ‘passage’ dice tower can trap some cavemen but using one’s drum may release them. Have your spear activated to protect your clan from predators (tiger and bear). Spend stone to enlarge your cave and herbs to buy Invention cards to earn your Rock Star VPs. 10 VPs wins. 45-60 minutes.
Sapiens (led by Amy) 2015 domino-like tile placement puzzle game. Balance resources for food and shelter but only your lowest score counts towards victory.
Rise of Tribes (led by Armando) 2018 game with unique dice placement mechanic, area control in a race to 15 VPS by building villages and fulfilling goal cards. Choices to Grow, Move, Gather or Lead (but only two can be chosen each turn) 45-60 minutes but it packs a wallop.
Fantasy Realms (led by Sean) 2017 card game – Draw a card, discard a card — though you can draw from the deck or the discard area! The game takes longer to score than to play due to the unique cards and their interactions. It takes a few plays to learn the deck before the depth reveals itself.

The Crew (no leader required) – addictive 2019 cooperative trick-taking card game to achieve missions.

2-Player Games
Pecking Order (led by Drew) 1998 Richard Garfield design.Players take turns playing a card at a perch; if a card is played where there is an opposing card, the lower card is discarded, with ties going to the defender. Only one of the cards is revealed – if the defender is already revealed the attacker remains hidden, otherwise the attacker is revealed. After 4 rounds, the player controlling the greatest total value of perches wins the game.
Fairy Trails (led by K-ban) 2020 Uwe Rosenberg (Bohnanza, Agricola, LeHavre, Patchwork) –  players play tile cards that expand the road network. Once a road is completed, that player may place a stone on each of their houses that are bordering it. The player who places all their 19 houses/stones first wins
Fox in the Forest (led by Dwayne) 2-player trick taking shouldn’t work…but it does. Anyone own the Duet cooperative sequel for our 2/9 session?
Klask (led by Emmet)  2014 magnetic dexterity game
Fugitive (led by Tim) 2017 asymmetric card chase from Tim Fowers. Will the fugitive escape or will the detective catch him?
The Game : Face to Face (led by K-ban) each player has an ascending and descending pile of cards (2-59) trying to be the first to play all their cards. The twist is – if you help your opponent by playing a card to one of their two piles you get to replenish your hand completely.
